Archival Revival Vol 1 is a series of 20 re-animated archive photographic portraits of military and naval personnel from the WW2 period courtesy of KODAK.
A.I augmented animation by electronic artist OUTERGROUND offers the viewer a window into the past with subtle expressions emphasising the character and bringing out the personality in each subject.
Photographs were taken at Kodak Australasia Pty Ltd factory in Abbotsford, Victoria – Australia between 1939-1945. This series is dedicated to all descendants of veterans.

OUTERGROUND says,
“I was immediately drawn to these photos in my research for subjects to re-animate. They are a selection from a large archive of photographs taken by unknown photographers at KODAK Australia, so they are technically high quality, which really helps the process of wire framing. I was immediately reminded of similar, striking portrait photos of my own Grandfather, Richard Fennah in his uniform, (Dick was a tank gunner in the British army during WW2) and it made me think about how I would pose him to bring him back to life. Each photo exhibits a sense of the person’s character and personality. By carefully studying the face and expression in each image, subtle posing seems to bring out / bring back a sense of who they were. I was really pleased with the results and like the old master portrait subjects, I began to feel a sense of familiarity and fondness for them. Knowing the horros of what some / most of these people went through I also felt it was important to give them a bit of a smile where possible. Having your portrait must have been a bit of a happy distraction from what was going on around them, it comes through in the images.”
